Mission: We are a group of residents in Mill Valley, Corte Madera, and Larkspur working to re-open the historic Alto Tunnel between Mill Valley and Corte Madera for use as a safe, multi-use path for everyone!!

Imagine a flat, safe, straight, automobile-free route between these two towns. . .

  • No need to drive on Camino Alto/Corte Madera or on Route 101 for quick errands or visits; the tunnel is less than _ mile long!
  • No need to negotiate the windy, hilly, narrow route along Camino Alto/Corte Madera Ave., competing with cars for lane space.
  • No need to wind along a convoluted patchwork of roads and hilly bike paths along 101 into or from a no-man’s-land of parking lots traffic lights.

This tunnel is a critical "missing link" in the beautiful pathway that runs from Sausalito through Mill Valley and continues in Corte Madera, but currently has a pile of rock in the way — the closed Alto Tunnel.

Opening the tunnel would provide a safe, easy way to get to a variety of stores, schools, and parks for everyone!

We believe re-opening the tunnel will provide a better option for EVERYONE: children, the elderly and less-mobile, as well as cyclists and pedestrians.

It is a resource that is already part of our community, owned by the County, and identified in the past as a key part of a County-wide biker/pedestrian network.

Please help us to re-open this tunnel so that the hiker/biker pathway can be connected. Call to find out how you can help—Paul Carroll

SAFES ROUTES MARIN

Safe Routes Marin meets the first Friday of every month at 14 Vasco Drive in Mill Valley. It's near the Edna Maguire School and very close to the Mill Valley side of the Alto Tunnel. Call 389-8838 for more information. All are welcome to attend meetings.

Directions (Biking or Driving):
From the intersection of East Blithedale and Camino Alto in Mill Valley, turn onto Camino Alto toward Corte Madera. After about 1/4 mile Vasco is a right turn. (It's the second right.)

From the Corte Madera side: go up an over Alto Hill. As you are approaching the last 1/2 mile of the descent into Mill Valley, Vasco is a left turn.
